Dear Church,

When life becomes turbulent, one thing that often keeps us unsettled is our desire for an explanation. We want to know why someone we love is diagnosed with cancer, why someone dear to us has been taken away, or why we are facing a severe financial crisis due to a loss of Job. The common questions we ask are, “Why is this happening, God? Why did You allow this?”

As believers, there are three truths we must understand:

  1. God doesn’t owe us an explanation.  Our God is good, just, and fair, and He does everything anchored in His love and never do anything to harm us.  His character is beyond questions. (Isaiah 55:8-9) 
  2. Even if God explained everything to us, we might not understand.  God’s ways are not our ways, and His wisdom surpasses our ability to comprehend.  We are limited in what we can grasp about His purposes. (Job 11:7-8) 
  3. Explanations rarely bring peace.  Consider Job. Did the explanations from his three friends – Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar – bring him any comfort?  No. Peace doesn’t come from knowing why; it comes from trusting who God is. (Philippians 4:6-7)  “The Peace of God that transcends understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus”


Yes, God comforts us. Yes, God grants us peace – but it comes through His presence with us as He walks with us through our trials. Worry, resentment, or bitterness over our circumstances will never bring peace. The only one who can bring true peace is Jesus Christ. That’s why Paul, while awaiting execution in a Roman prison, wrote these profound words:

“I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” – Philippians 4:11-13 (NLT)

Imagine how different our lives would be if we adopted this attitude in every situation.
