Dear Church,

Have we noticed that if our desire for Holiness is not drawing us into a vital relationship with Jesus Christ, it may not be Holiness at all that we are seeking?  It may just be an inordinate affection towards self-glory.  Our goodness, purity and serving Christ never ought to attract attention to themselves, they ought to be magnets to draw us to Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:22 says, now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life”.  The ‘benefits we reap’ from our salvation that leads to holiness flows from our identity as, ‘slaves to God’. For a believer sometimes, the only thing to do is be in relationship with Jesus.  Jesus said, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. “No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me”. (John 15:4)

Evading this vital connection is the danger we all can fall into. For some of us, ‘Christian work’ may be a means of dodging our souls abiding in Jesus Christ.  As a result, we get ‘burned out’ in ‘’serving’ the Lord which sounds like an oxymoron.  As Jesus told Martha, “Indeed only one thing is needed and that is to sit at the master’s feet”. (Luke 10)

Be Encouraged,
Mathews
