Dear Church,
The Apostle Peter is truly an anomaly – a man of startling contrasts who can relate to each of us on any given day. His life reflects the journey of a believer navigating a broken world, making him a figure we can all connect with. Here are a few things we notice about Peter:
- Peter is mentioned in the Gospels more than anyone else, aside from Jesus.
- No one speaks more often in the Gospels than Peter, and no one is spoken to by Jesus as frequently.
- Peter is rebuked by Jesus more than any other disciple.
- Yet, Peter is also the only one bold enough to rebuke Jesus.
- Peter confesses Jesus’ identity more clearly and sincerely than any other disciple.
- But Peter also denies Jesus more forcefully and publicly than anyone else.
- Jesus praises Peter more than any other disciple.
- Yet, Peter is the only one Jesus ever directly calls “Satan.”
Peter’s story takes a powerful turn after his denial when Jesus reinstates him in a moment of grace and restoration (John 21:15-19). Despite his failures, Jesus entrusts Peter with the care of His followers, affirming Peter’s role as a leader in the early church. His spiritual maturity and deep understanding of the Gospel shine through in his letters.
One passage that beautifully reflects Peter’s growth and heart is found in 1 Peter 1:3-5:
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”
This passage is the outpouring of an adoring heart. Only someone who has deeply reflected on the greatness of our salvation could express such magnificent praise. We can meditate on this verse for years and gain new insights each time we read it.
