Dear church,

Psalm 36 presents a stark contrast between the boundless love and faithfulness of God and the depravity of human nature. The key themes from the text are: I) God’s Steadfast Love: The psalm emphasizes God’s enduring kindness and righteousness towards those who know Him. This is a constant source of comfort and hope; ii) Human Wickedness: The psalmist describes the wickedness of the ungodly, their lack of fear of God, and their delight in evil. This serves as a reminder of the fallen state of humanity; iii) God’s Judgment and Protection: The psalm concludes with a prayer for God’s continued protection and judgment against the wicked.

This draws us to ponder our: 1) Gratitude for God’s Love: Reflect on the depths of God’s love for us. Despite our shortcomings, He continues to shower us with His grace and mercy.  2) Awareness of Sin: Consider the ways in which sin manifests in our lives and in the world around us. This deep awareness of sin within and without should draw us to pray for God’s help to overcome temptation and to live a life that honors Him.  3) Trust in God’s Protection: When faced with challenges or the wickedness of others, remember that God is our ultimate protector. We therefore need to trust in His timing and His sovereign plan.  4) Prayer for the Lost: Intercede for those who are unaware of God’s love. Pray that they will experience His transforming power in their lives.

Questions for Reflection:

  • How does the contrast between God’s love and human wickedness impact your perspective on life?
  • In what ways have you experienced God’s steadfast love in your life?
  • How can you be more intentional about sharing God’s love with others?

By meditating on Psalm 36, we gain a deeper appreciation for God’s character and His plan for our lives.

In Christ,

Gordon Chinamasa
