Dear Church,
Acts 1:8 says that when the Holy Spirit comes on us, we will be God’s witnesses, telling people about Jesus everywhere. The most effective way to reach others about God and what he can do in their lives is to share the story of what God has done in your life. The word ‘witness’ Jesus uses here is from courtroom language. A witness is one who says, “Here is what I have seen, what I have witnessed. A witness shares the story of what God has done in his/her life.
Notice here, Jesus doesn’t tell us to be his attorney, to argue the case, nor his judge, judging other people, he wants us to tell others what God has done in our life so that this can make an eternal difference in the lives of others. Now, I know what some of you are thinking, “I don’t have the right words to tell my story or, “I don’t really have a story that is compelling or interesting enough”. If God has saved you from sin and given you hope and joy that is eternal, then, you have a story that will never be boring.
Remember only the Holy spirit can convict and convert lives, ours is to sow the seeds and water it. “So, neither he who plants, nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives growth.” 1 Corinthians 3:7. This means that it isn’t our job to save people (that’s God’s job!), but to share all that you and I have experienced as a believer. This witnessing is both through words and actions. As you seek to share, do so with a heart of prayer for those you are sharing with and for your words to be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Be Encouraged,
Mathews
